Detective Comics #27

A copy of Detective Comics #27, which marks the debut of Batman, sold at auction today for more than $1 million, barely breaking a record set just three days ago by Action Comics #1.

The Associated Press reports the Certified Guaranty Company-graded 8.0 issue, sold by Heritage Auction Galleries on behalf of an anonymous party, was purchased for $1,075,500. Earlier estimates had the May 1939 issue selling for $100,000. However, as CBGExtra notes, bids had already reached $400,000 by the time the auction opened.

Before this week, the record for the most expensive comic book was $317,000, set in 2009 by a copy of Action Comics #1.

Batman Beyond: Return of The Joker.

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Is awesome. Seriously, my favourite Batman DTDVD after Mask of The Phantasm.

Batman Beyond, as we all obviously know but I’m going to explain anyway, takes place in the future. Bruce Wayne’s old. Too old to be Batman anymore.

In comes Terry McGinnis. A young punk. But when he’s father is murdered, he discovers Batman and yadda yadda, new future Batman.

Now, onto Return of The Joker. I will try and keep this spoiler free, even though the movie’s a few years old by now.

Joker’s back, somehow. Batman has to stop him. This might be the most personal the Joker has ever gotten in the animated continuity.

And the uncut PG-13 version is surprisingly adult and disturbing. At several points in the great, great flashbacks it’s quite dark.

Really, it’s just excellent. It might not be Mask of The Phantasm, which I still consider the finest Batman movie so far, better even then The Dark Knight, but wow, is it great.

Potential Spoilers: Justice League Of America Vol 2 #42

Monday, February 15th, 2010

jlav242

The new line-up continues to build as the Justice League of Alternatives takes on Dr Impossible who springs a surprise attack with some other teenage looking villains in shiny costumes.

Yeah, you heard me, Dr Impossible. Remember him? He was supposed to be the cool big bad from the relaunch, but he was just a controlled-by-mini-Starro pawn of Solomon Grundy. What was up with that? Maybe we’ll find out how badass he really is some time in the future.

Potential Spoilers: Hulk Vol 2 #20

The Intelligencia reveal their evil plan, to try and understand what the Hell is going on in these books. They put their mostly incredibly huge heads together but still can’t make head nor tail of things. Instead they invent a machine to create Orange, Yellow, Blue, Indigo and Violet Hulks.

Note: Red Hulk’s identity still not revealed. I’m past caring now anyway.

Potential Spoilers: Dark Avengers #14

Monday, February 15th, 2010

dav14

Captain America(s) recruit(s) the one thing that can beat The Sentry – The Burning Bush. Yes, the famous piece of topiary which spoke to Moses is back and ready to fight at the side of The Avengers against the tyranny of Norman Osborn. The only problem is that being a bush it is pretty stationary, so the rest of the issue is padding until Siege #3.

Of course, a talking bush does nothing for Norman’s sanity, so the innevitable Green Goblin transformation is imminent.

Potential Spoilers: Green Lantern Vol 4 #51

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Hal Jordan is all Parallaxed up to “defeat the Spectre”. Yeah right. He just missed his silver streaks didn’t he? Anyway, after 10 pages of Parallax hiding and then jumping out to say “Boo!”, the Spectre gives up and then – oh, quel surprise – Parallax doesn’t want to give up Hal. Fighting and much colorfulness ensues.

Also why didn’t they get Lex Luthor to take on Parallax? We could have used Parallex instead which might have been funny.

Or not. Work with me on this okay?

Potential Spoilers: Amazing Spider-Man Vol 2 #621

Monday, February 15th, 2010

amsp621

Spidey, Black Cat and Mr Negative engage in a bizarre Menage-a-Tois. Which will never work out really will it? It never does, no matter how much you want it to. At least one of the three will always want to make it more exclusive and then they get hurt emotionally. Its not worth it really.

Note, if you turn this cover upside down, it looks like a panel from Trouble #3.

Potential Spoilers: Superman Batman #69

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Superman and Batman fight some lame-o whilst discussing Our Worlds at War. Neither knows what it was really about but pretend to anyway. I think it was something to do with Imperius Rex or something, according to Wikipedia. So that means that Namor was in it then? Huh.

Azrael meets Ragman. Surprisingly there is a misunderstanding and they fight briefly before stopping to compare costumes.  They both retire to a 711 for a blue Slurpee but the 711 is blown up by Blackest Night Azrael. Hilarity ensues.
